The Know-Center and Graz University of Technology have announced a call for papers about the Geospatial Web; which is open for submission until the 10th of October 2006. The announcement summarizes that ".. the edited volume will bring together high quality contributions on the technical foundations of the Geospatial Web, present information services and collaborative environments built on top of geospatial platforms such as NASA World Wind, Google Earth and MSN Virtual Earth, and investigate the economic and societal impacts of such knowledge-intensive applications. A particular focus of the book is the integration of geospatial and semantic technology, for example to extract geospatial context from unstructured textual resources.".

It appears as if Graz University with this call has started off with something that came along the line of Julian Bleecker, who published about one year ago on O'Reilly's website an article called A Design Approach for the Geospatial Web. Many more papers have come out of the web 2.0 conversations and workshops in 2005; very recently I came across the "Expedition Workshop Open,Collaboration Networking Geospatial Information Technology" which was held just last week (June 20th, 2006). The workshops results are being followed up, but you can already see all of the presenters' slides used for their respective presentations. The event itself, supported by the wiki, seeks to foster five domains using a community of practice approach

Participants will explore opportunities for multi-disciplinary and community-based collaboration around national challenges. By drawing on strategic leadership and "best practices" underway in the geospatial area, participants will learn how to conduct open collaboration in their own settings. Presentations will illustrate exemplary collaboration that is transforming geospatial information technology today. Growing Communities of Practice will benefit from knowledge-sharing including:

  • Open standards development
  • Web-based collaboration environments
  • Ontologies for efficient information-sharing and semantic interoperability
  • Federal Enterprise Architecture Data Reference Model V2.0 and Geospatial Profile 1.1 (2.0 in process)
  • Community to national scale needs and applications

Check it out here - there's something hot to this group.
