At the end of 2005, Vivienne Bolsius conducted a research about the networked organization. She has studied (albeit not too much in detail) the Project Management Institute, or PMI, in the Netherlands. PMI is a collection of project management professionals with about 1500 members in The Netherlands, and is associated with the IPMA. From her research, it becomes unclear why she has chosen PMI but knowing the organization, it serves the purpose quite well. Having been part of the organization myself, I can attest that this organization is all that Vivienne finds givining meaning to its members
- Knowledge stewarding
- Establishing strong network
- Professionalization of the domains
- Knowledge Sharing
- Providing a sense of belonging
Between all of these, sense of recognition and belonging play an important part. While not explicitly mentioned, because the paper is more focused on communication than anything else, PMI consits of several communities of practice. Vivienne found several exponents of these communities, which can be found in various sections throughout the report. Following the line of the recommendations, the informal and formal communities could be fostered by the management. It is not sure how PMI as an organization will respond to her recommendations, though. Her paper makes an interesting read nevertheless, you can download it here (dutch).
