Carlos García Timon is reopens the discussion about strong ties vs. weak ties and their respective capacities in the openBC forums on social networks. He says, quoting:
[..] Even if high trust organisations probably have lower transaction costs that low trust organisations, radical innovation requires new data, diversity and incongruities. These new ideas look at the issues raised from a different perspective. The problems are analysed through open debate and members find unexpected solutions.
My comment refers back to a posting in this blog from the 14th of July, about the fact that networks / organisations with high trust may require less transaction energy (or: cost) but have significant higher maintenance cost.
Nevertheless, the discussion with Carlos lead me to add another research question in this field to my blog's whiteboard, where ideas for further research and discussion are gathered, and may be worked out in this (or other) blog(s):
the reciprocity of innovative capabilities between networks with strong ties and networks with weak ties
