In ICTs and Social Capital in the Knowledge Society (114 page PDF by FTP), the European Commission takes an in depth look at the role of new communication technology in helping develop various forms of social capital, including virtual communities, the dissemination of knowledge within and between communities of practice, and the notion of networked social capital. (from: Gilbert)
Chapter four is about social capital and communities of practice, mostly inspired by a workshop given by Paul Duguid co-author with John Seely Brown of the 1996 book Organizational learning and communities-of-practice: Toward a unified view of working, learning, and innovation - see also K-garden) and Ed Steinmuller. The document says "The difference between social capital and CoP might be framed under the broader academic dichotomy between so-called ‘lumpers’ and ‘splitters’. Lumpers attempt to collapse a variety of issues under a single rubric (like Putnam does with social capital), while splitters seek to find differences and distinctions."
There are three papers attached to the document about communities of practice, including Paul Duguid's "Organizational learning and communities-of-practice: Toward a unified view of working, learning, and innovation." A must-read during the Christmas Holidays.
