The efios blog: "It's all about people and networks"

15 July 2003

Neill Allan has written up together with Manon van Leeuwen a prototype chapter about culture and knowledge management. The outline is finished, but it's still missing stories.

They discuss "what is culture?" and the various layers of impact of culture on indivuals and organizations, in the shift towards a knowledge-enabled organization.

Communities play an important role in this paper, and are extensively covered. Interesting read.

The tenth edition of ALT-C is going to be organized in Sheffield, from the 8th until the 10th of September. The recurring theme for the event is the latest developments in ICT and education.

Part of the program is to create six ad-hoc communities of practice for reflection, knowledge sharing and evaluation. The communities are lead by invited practioners; who will lead each community for up to two times sixty minutes. It is not know whether the communities are for the duration of the conference only, and whether they will be supported afterwards as well.

The website gives more information about the conference, setup, programme and dues:

A report in "Wired" news from yesterday, brought to me by Sano Orbis, gave an interesting example of the use of virtual communities today.

In Germany, and now also the Czech republic, they are using the collaborative efforts of a virtual community to translate the latest Harry Potter books into their own language. If you read the article, you can see that it is not so much about another social grid but more about fostering an emerging community of interest. Bernd Koeleman says "The aim is not to create a translation as quickly as possible, and then stop. The translation is the beginning of life in this community."

EduCause LOVCOP Presentation: What's the Fuss About RSS?

Alan, Brian, and myself will be giving a presentation to the EduCause LOVCOP (Learning Objects Virtual Community of Practice) on Friday. We'll be talking about some of the work we've done on sharing learning objects using RSS, and what that pattern of resource sharing/distribution could mean to practicing teachers. We'll also be giving an overview of the background that led up to the RSS/LO work, and will talk a bit about future directions and implications.

There's a wiki that you can visit - surely something worth to keep an eye on. A brief outline of the project is available blogwise here
