Jay Cross has posted a whitepaper on Informal Learning - the other 80%, in support of Friday's eLearning Forum event.  Jay points out that learning is fundamentally social and traditional systems fail to support informal learning. Informal learning takes place within social networks as an outcome of conversation. [Ross Mayfield's Weblog] Jay Cross, author of this article is making a point that we have similarly been using in the context of communities of practice vs. information sources. Inside Shell EP it was mostly said that 'people are not willing to look up information in databases, because it is time consuming and you need to know what to look for in the first place. Therefore they prefer to use communities of practice as an unstructured way of acquiring knowledge, learning and getting answers". There was a rule of thumb similar to the above 80-20 rule, replacing 'informal' with 'unstructured' and 'formal' with 'structured'. My working paper, "Social Network Analysis for Knowledge Management", has been published by Knowledge Management Maqazine. They have retitled it KM and the Social Network and posted it online. You do not need to be a subscriber to view it. [Networks, Complexity, and Relatedness] Patti has done a good job with this article (a pity she cannot make it to Santa Cruz next week), which can be used both to introduce social network analysis (SNA) as a method in the KM arena, but also how to use it as an intervention in business processes. Between the lines and in the paragraph there is more information on how SNA fits in the ecosystem of tools that are available - yet "Social-network analysis is a tool that can be used, with discretion and sensitivity, on an ongoing basis in the context of continuous organisational improvement."
